The Bibris is one of the largest indigenous groups of Costa Rica, with 12,950 inhabitants located on both sides of the Talamanca mountain range.

The Bibris is one of the largest indigenous groups of Costa Rica, with 12,950 inhabitants located on both sides of the Talamanca mountain range. They keep many of their own traditions and generally speak both Spanish and Bribrí.

 

ECONOMY

They cultivate corn, palm and plantain. They combine their agricultural activities with other indigenous groups in the raising of pigs and birds, hunting and fishing.

RELIGION

Their native religion preserves the belief in Sibú (God) as creator of all that surrounds them. They also belive in Jawa (Sukia), who takes care of births, cures and funeral services. Their artisanal expression is basketwork, hunting and fishing instruments, and the construction of musical instruments.

Their principal occupation is agriculture related.

COMMUNICATION ROADS

These reservations have difficult access. Their population is dispersed and they commute by foot trails and gravel roads. They have to walk a lot to arrive at the central places. Due to this isolation, they have few services.

SERVICES

This population has very few services. When they need services, they go to Buenos Aires.

STE WÉ CABAGRA INDIGENOUS COMMUNITY MUSEUM
(BIBRI TRADITIONAL CULTURE)


LOCATION: Located in San Rafael de Cabagra, it´s 35 kms. north of El Brujo, in Buenos Aires, in the province of Puntarenas.

This museum has a permanent exhibition of an antique stove, an antique bed, bowls and arrows, a stone and bench for grinding corn and cocoa, and a present-day stove among other objects.

The museum building also reflects the indigenous architecture and the Terraba Culture.
