The International Park "La Amistad" is located in the Talamanca Mountains, and is considered to be the largest mountain area covered with tropical forest in the country.

Elevations vary from 1000 m above sea level to Cerro Kamuk at 3549 m and Cerro Durika at 3280 m.

It was created by ordinance in February of 1982.

Area:

The area of the park is 193 929 Hectares. It’s called “International” because it reaches into the neighboring country of Panama where an additional 207 000 hectares are protected.

The park is surrounded by the indigenous reserves of Chirripo, Taouni, Telire and Talamanca on the atlantic slope, and by the indigenous reserves of Ujarras, Salitre and Cabagra on the pacific slope of the Talamanca range.

In 1992, UNESCO declared it as the biosphere reserve La Amistad, and in 1983, as a world heritage site due to its universal importance, not only from a scientific point of view, but for it's conservation and natural beauty.

Within its territory, there are various types of forest: wet, rain and cloud; as well as regions crowned with rocky outcrops and peaks, and cold marshes only found in small, hight altitude areas.

According to the classification of life zones by Holdridge, the park has 7 life zones, and 6 transition zones.
The fact that Costa Rica acts as part of a biological bridge and filter between North and South America, and because it contains an extraordinary number of habitats due to the different altitudes, climate and topography, the park has great importance.

Plant and Animal life

The mixed forests and rain forests cover most of the territory, including extensive oak groves where the branches are laden with epiphytes.

There are banks of ferns, mostly lomaria sp. 2 meters high amd esfango sphagnum sp.
